Charles Keeling Lassiter

$4,500.00

Charles Keeling Lassiter

American (1926-2005)

“Surreal Fantasy City”

gouache, pen, watercolor on paper. (c. 1966)

24”w x 30” h

framed behind museum glass

Born in New York , an almost complete reclusive artist, with chronic agoraphobia, he barely left his New York apartment which was in general disrepair. Yet he received a degree in sociology from Yale and later studied art education at the New York University. Rejecting the Abstract Expressionist, pop or minimalistic style, his work wasn’t well known during his early years for he wasn’t capable of promoting his work even though early on he displayed success during his infrequent exhibits. It wasn’t till his later years when he met Stan Kaplan, a Florida private collector who promoted his work that his name became known in the art world.

He has exhibited in countries such as America, Switzerland, France including the Museum of Modern Art in 1956, and Musee de L’Art Brut in 1986.

His work can be viewed in the Metropoltan Museum of Art, NY; Yale University Arts Gallery, New Haven; Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh; Brooklyn Museum, NY; MOMA; Musee des Beaux-Arts, Lausanne, Switzerland; Kunsthaus, Zurich, Switzerland; Musee d’art et histories, Geneva, Switzerland.

I can look at this endlessly and still find new and fascinating drawings to look at.
